We’ve all been affected by the economy in some way. Some of us are harder hit than others. It seems that the “norm” in times like this is to “wait and see”. But, when the hope that something will change begins to fade, it’s time to adopt a new way of thinking. It’s hard to pick yourself up by the bootstraps when all hope is lost.
Realizing that things were not going to change for quite some time, I knew that I had to make a change. I couldn’t wait around for something to change externally, the change had to come from within. I needed something that would give me hope. That hope came in the form a fresh new start. Something as simple as opening a new checking account with a different bank gave me a clean slate to start a new chapter in my life. At least, a new financial chapter.
I didn’t have to spend a lot of money. It wasn’t like I moved, or bought a new car. It was something simple, a small success to celebrate. That one small step motivated me to get out there and earn some money to put into my new checking account. And, since it was a “new” checking account, my mindset was to find “new” ways to earn money.
Now, of course, I’m not suggesting that everyone should go out and open a new checking account. That’s just what worked for me, what got me out of my slump. It was the philosophy that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. A step in the right direction. Or, simply, a new direction. The best part is that, at the time, I didn’t even know what direction I wanted to go in. I just knew that I couldn’t stay on the path I was on. For me, it was the first step that determined where the second step was going to take me.
